TITLE OF THE E-LESSON
E-Learning from Nature: Transport in Plants
GEOGRAPHICAL AREA
Glenstal Abbey Estate
COUNTRY
Ireland
INTRODUCTORY TEXT TO THE LESSON
This lesson considers the way plants obtain water from the soil, transport it up through the stem and utilise it for photosynthesis in the leaves.
The students looked at xylem and phloem as vascular systems within the plant.
The xylem transports the water from the roots up and throughout the plant.
The phloem transports sugars from the production units in the leaves to anywhere the plant needs or can store it.
They briefly described the setting down of annual rings.
The lesson also shows an experiment to demonstrate the route water takes through the plant using coloured water and celery.
