COUNTRY
Ireland
INTRODUCTORY TEXT TO THE LESSON
This lesson looks at the initial survey of the area of natural interest. The location of the site study is described. The learning intentions are also described.

Students were required to to conduct field work in small groups, using keys to identify organisms in the area.

The students discussed the characteristics of living things.
They then used keys to identify animals and plants and to compare the characteristics of organisms in an area of human intervention with those in an area where there had been no intervention.

The students had clipboards and sketch pads, and also used worksheets and their mobile phones to gather their information. There was a scaffolding approach with student - teacher and student - peer learning.

Samples of fieldwork sheets and fieldwork recordings are shown. The context for future studies is described. The reflection of the teachers on the learning process is also described.
