Chapter 3 – Software tools
3.11 Evaluation tools
Assessment and its associated feedback are essential to student learning. However, you may find that more of your time is taken up with the areas of assessment associated with quality assurance, rather than its potential to support students' learning. Well designed assessment has numerous benefits aside from the obvious one of providing a measure of students' progress as it can be a means to engage students in their learning. Ideally then, you should aim to support active learning rather than Assessment of Learning to ensure that the assessment process is an integral part of your students' education.

Below are listed five powerful assessment tools that could be used in the classroom:
  • Socrative – Socrative engages students as learning happens with the choice of activity type. Launch a quiz, receive exit tickets, or ask a quick question for instant student feedback. Design and edit your own library of assessments specifically for your students. Save them to your Socrative account to use at a moment’s notice. Review student understanding at the class, individual student, or question-level. And, because each Socrative report is saved to your account, you can quickly download, email or transfer reports to Google Drive anytime.
  • Kahoot – Students use computers, cell phones, or other devices to join in the game. You can create flashcards for review. You can also embed videos and use Kahoot as part of the teaching process, or students can create review games to share.
  • Quizizz – Quizizz is a fun multiplayer classroom activity, that allows all your students to practice together. Quizizz works on all devices with a browser, including computers, tablets & smartphones.
  • Quizlet – Quizlet provides free study tools for students, teachers, and learners of all ages that can be used in and out of the classroom, on your own or with friends, and on the go with our iOS and Android apps. Using Quizlet is an effective way to get your students further engaged in what they're learning both in the classroom and at home. Our site offers six different study modes that appeal to all types of learners, allowing students to use what works best for them and go at their own pace. As a teacher, you can easily create Quizlet classes to share study material with your students quickly and track their progress. And with our team-based game, Quizlet Live, it's easy to get your whole class involved, learning the material and how to work together in the process.
