Chapter 3: Opportunities for International Cooperation in Science Education
3.3 School Education Gateway
The School Education Gateway is a single point of entry for teachers, schools, experts and others in the school education field. It presents, in 23 different languages, the European education policy, news, trends, expert articles, national initiatives, actions for schools, areas for interaction, educational project and additional resources. The website is public and open also to other educational stakeholders in order to encourage cooperation between schools and other organizations.

Each month there is a focus on a different topic, for example family learning, active citizenship or inclusion and languages in the early years.

From the section “latest” you will be able to know fresh insights into Europe’s policy and practice in school education, including news articles and a calendar of events.

In the “viewpoints” section you can find expert opinions and ideas in school education, provided through articles and interviews.

Under the section “Teacher Academy” you can discover a wide range of training opportunities and resources for your classroom as online and on-site courses that can provide you professional development opportunities. At the bottom of the page some teaching materials are available as well, from a “Guide for Educators” to “Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human rights Education”.

“Resources” section offers you a huge assortment of studies, reports and tutorials from Europe to use to improve and differentiate the lessons in your classroom. One of these interesting reports talks about the efforts to increase students’ interest in pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics studies and careers. This report published under the Scientix initiative addresses STEM education national strategies and initiatives related to the recruitment of STEM teachers.

Another peculiar report called “Football in Science Teaching” presents interesting experiments around football for biology, chemistry, computer sciences, math and physics developed by 20 teachers from 15 European countries. Football has been used as a method to stimulate the students' attention and they were able to learn and study, for example, how calculate the perfect flight curve of a ball or how big is the environmental impact of football events.
