Excursion to public park.
The 1st classes of the Agrarian sector of IIS 'Enriques' visited the park of Gambassi Terme end April and beginning of May, with the purpose of acquiring specific knowledge on the types of herbs, plants, trees and the importance of gardens and parks related to their social role and naturalistic perspective.
The town park of Gambassi Terme is located between the old town and the spa. It is definitely an important place, both for its nature and for entertainment and relax. Formerly belonging to Villa Sinnai, until 1916, the park was bought by Niccoli family, which enriched it with exotic plants from Africa.
After the local Administration had bought the park, it became public in 1928, and since then the area has been used for various purposes - folk festivals, cultural and political events. Today the park offers several opportunities for entertainment, playground for children, tennis and roller skating.
Walking round you can admire many species of plants and trees growing in the park, among which, a majestic black pine, a very old horse chestnut, and a large number of holly oaks and cypresses, which are very frequent in Tuscany. Particular attention is to be given to a beautiful red beech tree, characterised by its colour-changing leaves.
The students fully enjoyed the visit, thanks to the support and detailed information given by Prof. Antonio Corti, who led the group round the park in order to study the many types of herbs and plants.
The students were also engaged in a sort of game during which they took photos and made pictures of the various plants, matching each with information about their species and habitat. After filling in forms, each team of students reported what they collected to the rest of the group.
