INTRODUCTORY TEXT TO THE LESSON This e-lesson was recorded in the region of Romeu, located in North East Portugal. This particular area was chosen due to the presence of heavily fissured muscovite granite blocks. Light-colored granite dominated by felsic minerals, mainly muscovite and potassic feldspars are shown. Some important aspects are also highlighted: the roots of the plants introduced into the cracks / diacles of the granite block accelerating their weathering; the granulometry variation from coarser to finer, corresponding the larger grains to quartz minerals which are the most resistant.
The main learning objectives of this resource are:
- To understand the weathering of granites;
- To identify the minerals that constitute the granite before and after its hydrolysis.
