Chapter 2: European Commission’s Funding Opportunities
2.2 Erasmus + - Learning Mobility of Individuals
For nearly 30 years, with the Erasmus programme, million of European students were able to spend part of their studies at another higher education istitution or with an organisation in Europe. Now, with Erasmus+, mobility of learners and staff provides opportunities for students, trainees, young people and volunteers, as well as for professors, teachers, youth workers, staff of education institutions to undertake a learning and/or professional experience in another country.

Students have the opportunities not just to study abroad but also to enroll for a international intership. The areas covered by this programme are may and some as science, environment and engineering are included as well. It’s also provided the opportunity for school’s staff to work in higher education istitutions around Europe. The istitutions involved are not just school or universtites, but also museums and science centers.

The request for funding must be presented by the school and staff members cannot apply for the funding by themselves. The request must clearly shows that the aim is to support the professional development of some or all of the staff. Important part of the application is the European Development Plan which outlines the needs of the institution/organisation in terms of quality development and internationalisation, and how their planned European activities will meet those needs.

Mobility projects can cover one or more of the following: study courses, observation, job shadowing, training, and teaching. Overall, projects tend to last from between one to two years, but for individuals or groups of staff this can mean activity for as little as two days or up to two months in duration.

The funding covers, among the others, the following costs:
  • Travel: the amount is fixed and pre-calculated on the basis of the distance
  • Top-up for expensive domestic travel costs: the amount covers the cost related to the trip to reach a main HUB/airport and (or) a train/bus station within the country of origin
  • Organisational support: it includes costs directly linked to the implementation of mobility activities (excluding subsistence for participants), including preparation (pedagogical, intercultural, linguistic), monitoring and support of participants during mobility, validation of learning outcomes, dissemination activities.
  • Individual support: Costs directly linked to the subsistence of participants,
All the costs are calculated as contribution to unit costs, which means on prefixed amounts.
